چکیده

Embryonics (embryonic electronics) is a research project which attempts to draw inspiration form the world of biology to design better digital computing machines, and notably massively parallel arrays of processors. In the course of the development of our project, we have realized that the use of programmable logic circuits (field-programmable gate arrays, or FPGAs) is, if not indispensable, at least extremely useful. This article describes the main concepts of Embryonics and some of the peculiar features of the FPGA we designed to efficiently implement our embryonic machines. More particularly, we overview the mechanisms taken from the world of biology and how we brought them in the world of silicon.

Embryonics: Artificial Cells Driven by Artificial DNA

Embryonics is a long-term research project attempting to draw inspiration from the biological process of ontogeny, to implement novel digital computing machines endowed with better fault-tolerant capabilities. For this purpose FPGAs are extremely useful. However, through this project we designed MuxTree, a new coarse-grained FPGA, to implement our embryonic machines. This article focuses on the...

The Embryonics Project: Specifications of the Muxtree Field Programmable Gate Array

As new techniques for applying biological processes to the development of computer hardware reach maturity, the EMBRYONICS (for embryonic electronics) project [4] gains in complexity and flexibility of use. New features, such as the capability to more efficiently store data, [2] have lately been added to MUXTREE (for multiplexer tree) – our electronic molecule. A side effect to the flexibility ...

"Genetic Programming: Artificial Nervous Systems, Artificial Embryos and Embryological Electronics" (1991), by Hugo de Garis

In 1991, Hugo de Garis? article ?Genetic Programming: Artificial Nervous Systems, Artificial Embryos and Embryological Electronics? was published in the book Parallel Problem Solving from Nature. With this article de Garis hoped to create what he envisioned as a new branch of artificial embryology [5] called embryonics [6] (short term for ?embryological electronics?). Embryonics is based on the...

Toward Self-Repairing and Self-Replicating Hardware: The Embryonics Approach

The growth and operation of all living beings are directed by the interpretation, in each of their cells, of a chemical program, the DNA string or genome. This process is the source of inspiration for the Embryonics (embryonic electronics) project, whose final objective is the design of highly robust integrated circuits, endowed with properties usually associated with the living world: self-rep...

Spermatozoa Molecules in Relation to Bulls Fertility

Bull fertility may be defined as the process by which spermatozoa fertilize and activate the ovum and then support embryonic development. Bull fertility is a complex trait having relatively low heritability and plays a vital role for efficient production and reproduction of bovine. Various mechanisms involved in regulating bull fertility associated phenotype and reliable biomarkers are poorly d...
